DHS Extends Temporary Protected Status for Somalia

Somali refugees in the United States are now protected until 2024.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas recently announced that the Temporary Protected Status for refugees from Somalia in the United States has been extended. This status for Somali refugees was set to expire on March 18 but, after consulting with experts, protected status was extended to September 17, 2024. Longstanding conflict in the country continues to make the area dangerous for Somali nationals, and local recovery from natural disasters and disease outbreaks has become even more difficult than before.

“Through the extension and redesignation of Somalia for Temporary Protected Status, the United States will be able to offer safety and protection to Somalis who may not be able to return to their country, due to ongoing conflict and the continuing humanitarian crisis,” said Secretary Mayorkas. “We will continue to offer our support to Somali nationals through this temporary form of humanitarian relief.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For discernment for Secretary Mayorkas as he extends the protected status of those from conflicted nations.
  • For DHS officials as they evaluate the claims for protected status from refugees.
  • For the president and his administration as they adopt and update immigration policies.
